| Picture is an example. Yours will be very similar. Gorgeous colors--every bead a painting. These were traded in Mali, West Africa, but cut in Idar-Oberstein, Germany, an area long known for stone cutting and other lapidary expertise. Almost all Idar-Oberstein carnelian beads were originally exported to Africa and now are moving all around the world. There are lots of fakes around--glass beads made to look the I-O cut beads, mainly made in Czechoslovakia. Occasionally a strand will have a glass fake or two. When you see carnelian beads that seem old but are rounded on the edges, they are probably from India. The most common I-O beads are faceted, but there are also cylinder shapes and a number of other cuts and shapes. |
